Financial Aid
ONU Law continues to provide a premier legal education at a marginal cost. We remain the lowest private law school tuition of Ohio’s nine law colleges. As a private institution, all students pay the same tuition rates despite permanent state of residence. To off-set the cost of tuition, ONU Law offers competitive scholarships and grants to qualified candidates. For the last two years, ONU Law has awarded more than four million dollars in scholarships and grants to students in all three class years.
Scholarships and Grants
SCHOLARSHIPS
ONU Law awards merit-based scholarships to highly qualified students each year. These awards recognize exceptional students who possess outstanding academic credentials, diverse backgrounds, and leadership abilities that indicate the applicant’s potential to excel in all aspects of the law school experience. To be considered for an ONU Law scholarship, you must submit the application for admission and all required documents required within.
FINANCIAL NEED GRANTS
ONU Law awards a limited number of need-based grants to students whose FAFSA indicates significant need for assistance. Applicants must submit a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at the earliest possible date after Jan. 1, 2013.
CONTINUING SCHOLARSHIPS
Students who exceed their predictors their first year and do exceptionally well have the opportunity for an increase in their award offer for their second and third years. Students entering without an award offer their first year who do exceptionally well also have the opportunity to receive scholarship for their second and third years.
TRANSFER SCHOLARSHIPS
ONU Law reserves funding to be awarded to students wanting to transfer to ONU Law after their first year of law school. Awards are based on a full review of the students’ application and academic history.
Loan Assistance
Students needing assistance to help meet the costs of tuition and living expenses have several available options; Federal Direct Stafford Loan, Federal Graduate PLUS Loan, and Private Student Loan.
FEDERAL DIRECT UNSUBSIDIZED STAFFORD LOAN
ONU Law students are eligible for up to $20,500 in unsubsidized Stafford loans. Federal loans are deferred until the student graduates or falls below half-time. The grace period is six months. Unsubsidized means that the interest accrues on the loan once the loan is disbursed. To apply, visit – www.studentloans.gov and complete both the entrance counseling for graduate students and master promissory note.
FEDERAL GRADUATE PLUS LOAN
In addition to the unsubsidized student loan, students are eligible for a Grad PLUS Loan. Payments on this loan are deferred until six months after graduation or end or enrollment and may be used to cover any remaining educational needs up to the total cost of attendance. To apply, visit – www.studentloans.gov and complete the loan application, the entrance counseling for graduate students and master promissory note.
PRIVATE LOANS
Private student loans are offered through private lenders. A student can borrow up to their cost of attendance minus all other financial aid sources. Interest usually begins accruing once the funds are disbursed to the students account.
Scholarship Retention Data
The College of Law does not restrict its' financial aid to first year students alone, but awards significant aid to continuing students. For example, sixty-seven percent who entered the College of Law in the Fall of 2011 received a scholarship or grant in aid. Sixty-six percent of the students who entered in the Fall of 2011 and continued their studies at Northern received a scholarship or grant.
Students who were not awarded a scholarship or grant to support their studies during their first year in 2011-12 by who finished in the top half of the class were awarded scholarships to support their continuing study. Nineteen percent of the second year students offered a scholarship or grant in the Fall of 2012 did not receive any such aid during their first year.
