1973 - 1975: Alphonse M. Squillante

Alphonse M. Squillante served as Dean of the Ohio Northern University School of Law from 1973-75.

Squillante was born in New York City in 1932, and only heard Italian spoken at home. It was not until he began attending New York City public schools that he even learned he was living in an English-speaking country.

He received his B.A. from Wagner College in 1954, and his M.S. from Columbia University in 1957. He then received his LL.B. from Fordham University School of Law in 1962 and his LL.M. from New York University School of Law in 1970. He also served in the United States Army from 1954-56.

Squillante began his academic career in law as Assistant Professor at the University of Denver College of Law in 1965. He became Associate Professor in 1967 and also served as the Law Librarian. In 1968 he joined the faculty of the Drake University Law School as Professor of Law and also became Director of the Law Library. He became the school’s Assistant Dean in 1970 and Associate Dean in 1971.

Squillante joined the faculty of Ohio Northern University as dean in 1973. After his service to ONU, he joined the faculty of the University of Cincinnati as Professor of Law in 1975 where he remained until his retirement in 1993. Squillante’s tenure as dean at Ohio Northern was a time filled with incredible highs and lows. A highpoint of his career at ONU was the dedication of the new law school building in 1973 with a ceremony that included a U.S. Supreme Court Justice. Dean Squillante and the law school dealt with the unfortunate death of a young faculty member in 1975.

Squillante was an editor of the “Uniform Commercial Code Law Journal” and a contributing editor of the “Commercial Law Journal.” He wrote several books, as well as numerous articles and book reviews for professional journals.

He was a faculty member of the American Trial Lawyers Association and the Conference on Personal Finance Law. He was also a member of Phi Kappa Phi scholastic honor society, the Order of the Coif, and the Seldon Society.

Squillante passed away in his retirement home in Tucson, Ariz., in 1999 at age 67.
