ONU Law's Pre-Law Undergraduate Scholars (PLUS) Program

"A committment to Diversity"

The Program: June 9-28, 2013

2013 Application - Now Closed
(2013 Application opens Nov. 1, 2012)

ONU Law's PLUS program is designed to expose students to the fundamental skills necessary to succeed at law school and as a lawyer, offer a comprehensive look at the legal profession and inspire you to pursue a career in law. The program is a three-week residential program funded by the law college. The primary goal of the program is to promote diversity in the legal profession and is directed at freshman and sophomores (rising sophomores and juniors) from groups that are underrepresented in the legal profession or face significant financial and familial obstacles in their pursuit of a career in law.

Students will have an opportunity to meet and interact with law school professors, deans, directors, current students, practicing attorneys, judges and community leaders. The program will also give students the tools to navigate through the law school application process. In addition, it will offer several educational and fun outlets and opportunities to travel.

Students' experience will include:

  • Law school classes
  • A moot court competition
  • Field trips
  • Workshops
  • Panel discussions
  • Receptions and banquets

Cost: The program is offered at no cost to participants.

Participants will be provided a comfortable campus apartment, a Polar Card for their meals and a stipend for living expenses. The program will also provide some assistance for their travel to Ada at the start of the program and to return home at its completion.

Application Process

Please submit the following:
1. A 2013 PLUS Program application
2. At least one letter of recommendation, preferably from a professor who is familiar with your academic performance
3. A personal statement telling us about your background and explaining your interest in the legal profession
4. Updated resume (optional)
5. College Transcripts

Decisions will be made on a rolling basis; therfore students are encouraged to apply early. The deadline to submit an application is April 16, 2013.

About the College of Law

Currently celebrating 127 years of preparing students for the profession, the Ohio Northern University Claude W. Pettit College of law is the second oldest of the nine law schools in Ohio. The College’s diverse student body consists of 290 students from more than 45 states and several foreign countries in its full-time juris doctor degree and LL.M. programs.

ONU Law is the sixth smallest ABA accredited law school in the United States, but remains competitive with larger law schools by providing nationally recognized and innovative programs. Among these are the LL.M. in Democratic Governance and Rule of Law, a Concurrent JD/MPPA program for students interested in Taxation, the Summer Starter Program for students with exceptional undergraduate records, wide ranging experiential learning opportunities that are available for all students and a library that is ranked first among private law libraries in Ohio.

In the fall of 2010, the College unveiled its new curriculum with an enhanced first-year experience and January term that offer students an opportunity for concentrated study of emerging legal issues with both ONU and visiting faculty.

To complement these programs the College’s faculty provides personal attention, hands-on skills training and an international perspective in the classroom.

Student Life

Students will be provided a comfortable campus apartment, a Polar Card for their meals and a stipend for living expenses. The program will also provide some assistance for their travel to Ada at the start of the program and to return home at its completion.

Ohio Northern provides a unique environment for students to learn. Participants will have access to excellent facilities and the top ranked private law library in Ohio. Located in the peaceful town of Ada, they will enjoy a relaxed atmosphere to live and study. The picturesque, tree lined, 300- acre campus of ONU will provide students with housing, a sports center, outdoor recreation and other amenities all within walking distance. In Ada, students will again find within walking distance, churches of various religious denominations, a public library, reasonably priced restaurants (some of which will take Polar Card for payment) and a park and recreation facility. Centrally located, Ada sits minutes from the county seat, just over an hour from Columbus, Dayton, and Toledo, and 2 hours from Cincinnati. Ada will afford you all the benefits of small town living with the advantages of larger cities at your fingertips.
