Question 1: What free software is available to me?

  • Microsoft Windows 7, Windows 8 (upgrade license)
  • Microsoft Office 2010, Office 2013, Office 2011 for Mac
  • To download your copy of any Microsoft product go to http://www.onu.edu/node/45037
  • Corel WordPerfect X3
  • CALI Lessons
  • Microsoft Security Essentials - Anti-Virus, Anti-Malware protection for Windows
  • Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 and Adobe CS5 - installed on lab computers

 

 

Question 2: What are the different printers in the lab used for?

Lexis\Westlaw Printers:
Using your network username and password - log on in the computer lab and visit either Lexis's or Westlaw's website - after signing in to your account, it will automatically print to the Lexis or Westlaw printer.

Resume\Envelope Printer:
This printer is located just inside the computer lab door. Log onto one of the computers in the lab and when ready choose "Ti144" from the printer selection pull down menu. Print a sample - then place your resume paper in the bottom paper tray and now print.
 

 

Question 3: How do I print from my laptop?

Go to Settings, click on Printers and Faxes, click Add a Printer

Click Next. Choose a network printer or a printer connected to another computer.
Click Connect to this printer. In the Name blank, type:
\\onuprn1\ti14401-prn (or) \\onuprn1\ti14402-prn

 

Click Next. Click Finish. It may ask you for a username and password; use "onu\(user name)", then enter the password you use to log onto the network.

 

Question 4: How do I print double-sided and single-sided pages?

Go to File, click Print:

Click Properties:

To print double-sided pages, check Print on Both Sides.
To print single-sided pages, uncheck Print on Both Sides.
Click OK.

 

Question 5: What else is available in the computer lab?

Document/Printer Scanner
Logging onto the dedicated network computer allows use of an HP scanner. Adobe Pro 9 allows quick scans to PDF. Step by step instructions are posted for easy scanning

Question 6: How do I access my email?

After opening a web browser, navigate to http://mail.onu.edu/

  • Enter username and password, click Login

 

Question 7: How do I change my password?

Question 8: What is Moodle and how do I access it?

What is it?
Moodle is ONU's online learning and course management system. It is used by professors to post notes, assignments, exams or host online discussions.

How do I access it?
Moodle can be accessed by going to http://northernonline.onu.edu

  • Log into Moodle using your ONU network user name and password
  • A list of courses that you are enrolled in will appear on your home page
  • You will need either Microsoft Word or Adobe Reader to view the content that your professor has posted
  • Supported web browsers: (minimum versions) Internet Explorer 8, Mozilla Firefox 4, Safari 5 or Chrome 11

 

Question 9: How do I connect to a wireless network?

      Check your "Wireless Network Connection" list for either - ONU SECURE and or ONU UNSECURE

      Choose "ONU Secure" SSID (password via Law Help Desk or ONU Help Desk ext.1111)

      Choose "ONU Unsecure" SSID

      Both will require ONU netwok credentials

    

  • Where is it available?

Wireless network is available through out the ONU Law School and at Northern on Main (NOM, coffee shop across from campus).

  • What if I don't have wireless on my laptop?

You can plug in at any table or study carrel throughout the library.

 

Question 10: What Internet Services are offered off-campus?

  • Embarq DSL 1-800-407-5411.

Question 11: What are network drives?

Personal Drive (H:)
A network drive that is backed up by ONU hourly. Default space available 100meg. This drive is available thru out the ONU campus.

This drive is only accessible when on the ONU campus - using your ONU network username and password

Public, Applications Drive (P:)
A network drive that is backed up by ONU hourly. This drive is available thru out the ONU campus.

This drive is used by professors and faculty and various student groups. You may be given "permissions" to access folders on this drive via your professor or by contacting Harry Roberts at ext. 2842.

 

Question 12: Connecting to network drives with Windows or Mac OS's?

Connecting to Network Drives

Windows 7

Mapping to the H drive

Open Computer from the Start Menu and Click Map network drive from the menu bar

In the Drive drop down box, select H:.  In the Folder box, type "\\onufs02\home\username", where "username" is your network username.  You may also use "\\onufs02.onu.edu\home\username".

Check the Reconnect at logon check box.

Check the Connect using different credentials check box.

Click Finish

When prompted for logon credentials, type ‘onu\username’ and your network password.  Username is your network username.  Click OK.

If you have successfully authenticated, you will be presented with your H: drive

 

Mapping to the P drive

Open Computer from the Start Menu and Click Map network drive from the menu bar.

In the Drive drop down box, select H:.  In the Folder box, type "\\onufs01\public".  You may also use ‘\\onufs01.onu.edu\public’.

Check the Reconnect at logon check box.

Check the Connect using different credentials check box.

Click Finish

When prompted for logon credentials, type ‘onu\username’ and your network password.  Username is your network username.  Click OK.

If you have successfully authenticated, you will be presented with the P: drive.

 

Mac OS X 10.6 Minimum

 Connect to H: Drive

  1. Click on the Desktop
  2. Go to "Finder menu" - click "Go - Connect to Server"
  3. Type smb://onufs02.onu.edu/home/your username for the "Server Address" field.
  4. Click Connect
  5. Wait for the "SMB/CIFS Filesystem Authentication" window to appear. Type ONU in the "Workgroup/Domain" field.
  6. type in your ONU network username in the "Username" field. Enter your password in the "Password" field.
  7. Click OK.
  8. The drive will appear "mounted" on your desktop as your "username". 

  Connect to P: Drive

  1. Click on the Desktop
  2. Go to "Finder menu" - click "Go - Connect to Server".
  3. Type smb://onufs01.onu.edu/public in the "Server Address" field.
  4. Click Connect
  5. Wait for the "SMB/CIFS Filesystem Authentication" window to appear. Type ONU in the "Workgroup/Domain" field.
  6. type in your ONU network username in the "Username" field. Enter your password in the "Password" field.
  7. Click OK.
  8. The drive will appear "mounted" on your desktop as your "Public".

 

Question 13: What specifications do you recommend for my laptop?

For law school, you NEED Microsoft Word for exam purposes - No Ipads or Android or Linux based Operating Systems

Minimum hardware specifications:

Windows 7 Operating System

  • 2 GB RAM (memory) 4 GB prefered
  • 80 gig HDD (hard drive)
  • Pentium or AMD processor
  • Internal wireless 802.11b/g (wireless is available throughout the law school)

Mac Tiger or Lion Operating System

  • 2 GB RAM (memory)
  • 80 gig HDD (hard drive)
  • Internal wireless 802.11 b/g (wireless in available throughout the law school)

Recommended software:

  • We offer free to students Microsoft Windows 7 or 8, Office 2010 -2013, 2011 for Mac and Corel WordPerfect X3.

 

Question 14: How do I configure Android Devices for ONU GMail?

Gmail on an Android

1) Open Settings.

2) Open Accounts and Sync

3) Create a new Gmail account.

4) Sign in with their @onu.edu account

5) Open the Gmail app.
