Candidates for the concurrent JD/LLM Program in Democratic Governance and Rule of Law must first be admitted to the ONU College of Law’s JD program. After being admitted to the JD program, the candidate shall submit the following documents to the director of the LLM program:
- The supplemental application for the concurrent JD/LLM in Democratic Governance and Rule of Law program
- A personal statement indicating the reasons why the candidate wishes to pursue the concurrent JD/LLM degree, his or her career objectives, special interests and accomplishments
- At least one letter of recommendation supporting the candidate’s admission to the JD/LLM program
Applicants may be interviewed by the director or assistant director of the LLM program after all materials have been submitted. Admission decisions are based on evidence of the student’s interest, aptitude and commitment to promoting the rule of law internationally.
While there are no grade requirements for admission to the concurrent program, there are minimum first-semester grades necessary to continue in the program and participate in summer externships. Students must have a first-semester GPA of at least 2.5 and a grade of at least C+ in the first-semester Legal Research and Writing course to continue with the first LLM course in the spring semester and the externship placement process.
Students are encouraged to apply shortly after acceptance into the JD program so that they may participate in activities with the international LLM students and the L-2 and L-3 concurrent students during the fall semester. There is no fixed deadline for admission, and students may apply after they have begun courses at ONU in the fall. However, the number of seats in the program is limited so early applications are encouraged.
