Lecture on death penalty scheduled

The Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law presents Robert C. Trenkle in the Celebrezze Moot Court Room on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 11:30 a.m.

The title of Trenkle’s lecture is “Representing Defendants in Death Penalty Cases: What Law School Doesn’t Teach You.” The event is free and open to the public.

Trenkle works in private practice, focusing on criminal defense and representing defendants facing the death penalty. He handled his first death penalty case in 1989 and has since handled more than 50 cases where the state sought the death penalty in more than 20 counties in Florida and North Carolina.

Trenkle graduated with honors from University of North Carolina School of Law in 1986. Upon graduation, he worked in the public defender’s office in Florida. From 1989-91, Trenkle taught at the University of Florida School of Law in Gainesville, Fla. He left the school in 1991 to pursue a career with the office of the public defender in Chapel Hill, N.C. The public defender’s office in North Carolina represented capital defendants throughout the state. His career excelled in North Carolina, as he became the first staff attorney and served as the first head of the office on an interim basis.

This event is sponsored by the Criminal Law Society and the ONU student chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.
