On this week 20 years ago, the Rwandan Genocide began. Over the next 100 days an estimated 500,000 to 1,000,000 Rwandans were killed. ONU Law Professor Jean-Marie Kamatali fled the violence in his homeland, only to return years later to provide legal counsel to many accused of murder. In this moving opinion piece for The New York Times, Kamatali examines why so many ordinary people were compelled to do such terrible things.
ONU's Center for Democratic Governance and Rule of Law explores the 20th anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda with events on Thursday, April 10, and Friday, April 11.
