The Environmental Law Society at ONU is a Chapter of the National Association of Environmental Law Societies.  We are a fairly small group of law students that try to raise awareness about environmental law and related issues.  Our primary objective last year was to fundraise in order to make it possible to host more speakers in the future.  This year we tried to incorporate more practical skills activities, an example being a library research activity for the first-year students.  This semester we will likely be traveling to Columbus to share lunch with several environmentla lawyers in the areas, as well as plan more legal skills activities.

The ELS promotes awareness and discussion of current environmental law and policy issues.  ELS seeks to provide Ohio Northern University law students opportunities to learn, become actively involved in environmental projects within the school, network with professionals, and strengthen their practical skills.

Federalist Society

The Federalist Society for Law and Public Poicy Studies, most frequently called simply the Federalist Society, is an organization of conservatives and libertarians seeking reform of the current American legal system in accordance with a textualist or originalist interpretation of the U.S. Constitution.  Through speaking events, lectures, and other activities, the Federalist Society provides a forum for legal experts of opposing views to interact with members of the legal profession, the judiciary, law students, and academics.

The purpose of the Society is to foster critical thought and debate about the application of conservative principles to the law.  The Society embraces the principle that the State exists to preserve freedom, that the separation of governmental powers is central to the integrity of the Constitution of the United States of America, and that it is emphatically the province and duty of the judiciary to say what the law is - not what it thinks it should be.  The Society seeks both to promote an awareness of these principles and to further their application through its activities.  This entails reordering priorities within the legal system so as to places a premium on individual liberty, traditional values, and the rule of law.  It also entails restoring recognition of these norms among lawyers, judges, law students, and professors.

Icelandic Legal Exchange Program (ILEP)

The purpose of the Icelandic Legal Exchange Program is to promote understanding, through discussions of the legal system of another culture, and that although there may be differences between the systems, they are simply different methods of solving the same problems.  The program wishes to be perceived as an intermediary between Iceland and the United States, and serve the function of giving information to anyone interested, and allowing anyone to earn the opportunity to experience, by a visit to Iceland, the culture and legal system of Iceland.

The ILEP was founded in 1960 by Dean Eugene Hanson of the ONU Law College and the Dean of the University of Iceland's School of Law.  During the fall semester, ONU Law students host Icelandic law students for one week.  The students are exposed to the American legal system through a series of events organized by ILEP.  In the spring, ONU Law students travel to Iceland for an introduction to the legal system and rich culture of the Nordic country.
