Icelandic Legal Exchange Program (ILEP)
Founded in 1960 by Dean Eugene Hanson of the ONU College of Law and the Dean of the University of Iceland’s School of Law, the Icelandic Legal Exchange Program (ILEP) promotes the understanding of differences between the legal systems of Iceland and the United States. ILEP is a cultural exchange program that fosters education and understanding through interaction between ONU Law Students and Icelandic law students.
For a week during late October, Icelandic law students from the University of Iceland stay with ILEP members in their homes here in Ada. The Icelandic students are exposed to the American legal system through a series of events organized by ILEP members. Trips with the Icelanders usually include trips to the Ohio Supreme Court, the Ohio Statehouse, and a prison tour. ONU law students who participate in the program are then given a stipend to visit Iceland during Spring Break in early March. ONU students who travel to Iceland during spring break get an introduction to not only the Icelandic legal system, but also the rich Icelandic culture. The program is free to join and is one of the few organizations in the entire University that allows interaction with students from another country.
