ONU Law ranked No. 6 in the nation for practical training
The Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law has been ranked No. 6 in the nation for practical training in the spring 2019 issue of preLaw magazine. The “Best Schools for Practical Training” rankings honor law schools that offer the most comprehensive practical training and provide the most options for students.
PreLaw recognizes ONU Law for making the biggest leap of any law school in the rankings. After earning an A- last year, ONU Law now ranks among top law schools Northeastern University, Pepperdine University, the University of California Irvine, Yale Law School and the University of Chicago.
PreLaw rankings are based on experiential-learning opportunities. Taking data from the American Bar Association and individual law schools, preLaw looks at several categories, including legal clinics, externships, simulation courses and interschool competitions.
At ONU Law, students are guaranteed a spot in one of two law clinics: the civil litigation clinic and the corporate transactional clinic. Both are based in Lima, Ohio, at the ONU Legal Clinic. Under the direction of faculty, these clinics provide free legal services to individuals and organizations that would otherwise not be able to afford legal representation. Additionally, ONU Law students are guaranteed a spot in one of 10 different externship placements: litigation, bankruptcy, environmental, governmental, nonprofit litigation, municipal government, labor and employment, prosecution, public defender, and judicial.
“Through ONU’s law clinics and externships, our students have the unique opportunity to get into the courtroom and work with real clients in real settings,” said Lauren Bartlett, director of legal clinics and associate professor of law. “The great thing about our program is that our students are guaranteed a position, which helps them enrich their legal educations and add value to their law degrees.”
In addition to this ranking, ONU Law recently has been recognized by other national publications. U.S. News & World Report lists ONU Law as one of the top-tier American law schools (No. 136) and ranks several ONU Law specialty programs: tax law, intellectual property law, international law, clinical training and trial advocacy. Additionally, Law School Transparency places ONU Law lowest on its list of “Projected Debt Owed at First Loan Payment” among private law schools in the United States, which means ONU Law students have much less debt after graduating.
