Lex Brown chose to attend Ohio Northern University for his undergraduate studies knowing that he also wanted to go on to attend ONU’s Pettit College of Law. As a “double Polar Bear,” he has always appreciated the environment of Ada, Ohio. The small class sizes and the rural location of ONU “create a sense of comradery and allow one-on-one interaction with professors in classes and participation in student organizations,” he said. Additionally, there are little distractions while pursuing your JD.
This tight-knit environment helps to establish a loyal alumni network, because graduates recognize that the education they received here would not have been possible anywhere else. “Attending Ohio Northern is almost like a letter of recommendation in itself when you go to ask for help from alumni. They have gone through the curriculum themselves, so they know you are capable,” Lex said. ONU Law alumni actively look to hire our students in jobs around the country. Case in point: Lex has had two paid internships with ONU Law alumni. As an undergraduate student, he was enjoying time in Florida on spring break when he learned that a practicing attorney in the area was an ONU graduate. He went to her office, knocked on her door to introduce himself, and by the end of the conversation he had been offered a paid internship in Sarasota, Fla., before his junior year. “At that point, I had little value to her in regards to my knowledge of the legal field, but she understood that what she was doing for me would set me above so many others in the future. It was a risk she didn’t think twice about. As an ONU student, she knew what I was capable of and she wanted to help in any way she could.”
In addition to valuable alumni connections, Lex attributes his positive experiences at ONU Law to strong relationships with his classmates. “Ohio Northern has provided me with lifelong friends – a diverse group of people who are brilliant in many different areas of life, friends who are wise because of their experiences,” he explained. Experiencing the challenges of legal education can be overwhelming, but it is comforting for Lex to share the struggles and successes with a group of friends who share similar goals. “I know that as I travel through life I’ll be able to call on any one of them if I’m ever in need of anything.”
