Kormendy Lecture explores name, image, likeness (NIL), and the future of college athletics

ONU Law will wrap up its 2024 Spring Lecture Series on Thursday, April 25th, from 4 – 6 p.m. in Tilton Hall, Room 129. This year’s Kormendy Lecture will be the College of Law’s first-ever Sports Law Symposium, featuring four distinguished panelists.

The event titled, “Beyond the Field: Navigating the Changing Legal Landscape of College Athletics,” will feature former ONU Law Professor Dallan Flake who now serves as Professor of Law for Gonzaga University School of Law. He will be joined by panelists David Ripath, Professor of Sports Business at Ohio University, Steven Reid, Associate Athletic Director for Compliance at Fresno State University, and Michael Lawson, Sports Law Attorney, O’Connell & Aronowitz, Albany, New York.

College sports are undergoing a major shift due to the progression of name, image, likeness (NIL), employment status of student athletes, and numerous lawsuits facing the NCAA, which serves as the governing body of college sports. The panelists will provide insight into this quickly changing and complex industry and provide guidance on how members can prepare.

Panelists will also address the alarming rise of spectator abuse of college athletes and legal changes within college sports, be it NIL, one-time transfer exception policies, employment status, and additional educational benefits.

The event is free and open to the public and for those interested, offers two hours of CLE (pending approval from the Ohio Supreme Court). Only those seeking CLE credit need to register at the door.

For those that cannot join us in person, join us via Zoom at:  https://onu.zoom.us/j/94678970978

There will be a Meet the Speakers Networking Event in Tilton Hall’s Informal Student Lounge at 3 p.m. Light snacks and refreshments will be served.

The event is hosted by ONU’s Sports Law Society.
