Lies, Deceit and the Ethical Rules: Can Attorneys Practice Deception?
What happens when doing the “right” thing means breaking the rules?
This year’s Goldman Lecture takes a fascinating true-crime case involving a serial killer, a fake public defender and a prosecutor who crossed ethical lines in an effort to bring a dangerous suspect into custody. Nationally recognized legal educator Philip Bogdanoff will explore the complicated intersection of deception, ethics and the Rules of Professional Conduct—and challenge us to consider where we would draw the line.
The lecture will be held Tuesday, October 6, 2026 at 11 a.m. in Tilton Hall, Room 129.
Bogdanoff brings more than 25 years of experience as a senior assistant prosecutor in the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office, where he argued 30 cases before the Ohio Supreme Court, including six death penalty cases. Now a special prosecutor and nationally recognized CLE speaker, he has presented to more than 70 bar associations, law firms and legal organizations across the U.S. and Canada.
