The International Law Journal cordially invites you to attend its inaugural symposium titled “Democracy to Autocracy: The Signs and Symptoms on a Global Stage.” The event will be held October 24, 2025 in Tilton Hall, Room 129.
This inaugural gathering will unite leading scholars and practitioners to explore one of the most urgent challenges of our time: the global drift from democracy toward authoritarianism.
Throughout the day, speakers will examine authoritarian trends in the Caucasus region (includes all or part of six countries: Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey, and Iran), assess the Rule of Law in Russia and the growing influence of President Putin, and reflect on the shifting power structures that continue to shape the Arab world after the Arab Spring. Adding further depth, Law Professor Jean-Marie Kamatali will share insights from his recent research, highlighting the critical relationship between the Rule of Law and the protection of human rights.
The Symposium will culminate in a keynote address by Professor David Pimentel, former ONU Law visiting professor and current faculty member at Idaho State University College of Law. His presentation, “Promoting the Rule of Law to Resist the Rise of Autocracy: The Precarious Role of the Courts,” will challenge us to consider how legal institutions can serve as a safeguard against the erosion of democratic governance.
Join us for this inaugural event, where diverse perspectives and critical insights will converge to illuminate the signs and symptoms of authoritarianism on a global stage.
