Dean Rose wins Lifetime Achievement award

Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law is proud to announce that Dean Charles H. Rose III has been selected to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Teaching Advocacy from the Center for Excellence in Advocacy at Stetson University College of Law. The award will be formally presented on June 10, 2025.

The award honors individuals who have made a profound and enduring impact on the way advocacy is taught, recognizing decades of commitment to advancing the discipline through teaching, innovation, and mentorship.

“The award recognizes individuals for their exceptional contributions and lasting positive impact on how the art and science of advocacy is taught,” said Elizabeth Boals, associate professor of law and director of the Center for Excellence in Advocacy. “It acknowledges sustained high-quality work and significant accomplishments throughout a lifetime of dedicated service, as well as demonstrated commitment and continuous effort to improve advocacy education.”

The recognition comes on the heels of Dean Rose’s return from leading ONU Law’s annual study abroad program in Reykjavik, Iceland—an immersive two-week course focused on advanced trial advocacy skills through theory, practice, narrative building, and cross-cultural collaboration.

Dean Rose joins a distinguished list of recipients who, according to Boals, “have inspired others in the advocacy community and have served as role models for future generations of trial lawyers.”

Prior to his current role at Ohio Northern University, Dean Rose served as professor of law and director of the Center for Excellence in Advocacy at Stetson, where he led the law school’s nationally top-ranked Trial Advocacy Program. Under his leadership, the program held the No. 1 national ranking in trial advocacy for 12 consecutive years.

Dean Rose also served more than 20 years on active duty in the U.S. Army, holding roles as a linguist, intelligence officer, and judge advocate. His academic interests center on advocacy persuasion techniques, and he continues to teach and write on criminal procedure, military law, evidence, and professional ethics.

Dean Rose holds a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University at South Bend, a JD from Notre Dame Law School, and an LLM from the Judge Advocate General’s School, United States Army.
